Optimal Replacement Percentage of Recycled Concrete Aggregate from Concrete Cylinder Samples for Reinforced Concrete Pipe Culverts

Recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) have been used in various research studies within the realm of construction, utilizing recycled aggregates in the production of concrete, which substantially reduces the need for natural aggregates. This study examined the performance of the Reinforced concrete pipe culvert (RCPC) when recycled concrete aggregate is used as a replacement for its natural aggregate. It utilized varying replacement rates of 30%, 65%, 80%, and 100%. Mechanical properties such as the D-load (Design load), Ultimate load and water absorption of the RCPC were obtained in accordance with the ASTM C 497-M. The D-load RCA replacement showed a reduction of 14.28%, 0.14%, 16.66%, and 19% respectively compared to NA. Similarly, the Ultimate load saw decreases of 30.85%, 19.43%, 30.72%, and 30.77% respectively compared to NA. For the water absorption, it was higher by 2%, 1.237%, 4.509%, and 5.002% respectively when compared to NA. The results indicated that the concrete pipe with RCA partial replacement offered lower performance. However, the optimum ratio for RCA replacement in the concrete pipe was found to be 65%, as it yielded favorable mechanical properties compared to the control variable, natural aggregate (NA). Overall, the results suggested that while concrete pipes made with RCA exhibited slightly inferior performance compared to commercial pipes due to the inherent properties of RCA, they still met the specifications mandated by ASTM and DPWH standards.
