Microplastics (MPs) are a universal type of pollutants that harm the state of the biosphere and human health. Microplastics are often associated with consumer behavior and commercial activity, so steps must be taken to reduce the amount being released into the environment. In light of such information as the global spread of microplastics in soil and wastewater which has been seen to impact the soil microbial population and characteristics in negative ways, it is crucial now more than ever, to continue reducing the number of plastic inputs in the environment which is a problem requiring collective effort from a cross-section of scholars from across the world. This chapter conducts a critical examination of the current approach to different methods of microplastic removal with a focus on innovative technology. After a critical review of the sources of microplastics, some papers highlighted methods that include physical, chemical, and biological methods for the removal of microplastics. Accordingly, this chapter aims to review new technologies employed to tackle microplastic pollution and reduce its negative effects. This work will identify some of the knowledge gaps in microplastic contamination and compile all available data to provide recommendations based on empirical findings.
