Recent Advancements in Crime Scene Documentation

Crime scene documentation is one of the most important steps during investigation of crime scene. It helps in creating a permanent recording of the actual condition of the scene along with a record of all the evidences and potential evidences that are present there. Traditional methods have been routinely used but are now being upgraded given the advancements in technology. The present chapter provides a brief overview of some of the advancements in the field of crime scene documentation. The techniques such as 3D laser scanning, photogrammetry, 3D modelling, total stations, and LiDAR and their applications are briefly presented. Using these techniques, a comprehensive record of the scene can be obtained while reducing the time taken and preventing certain fallacies associated with traditional manual approach. These provide a framework for robust documentation required to produce the most exquisite scene diagramming by efficiently capturing details.
