With the onset of Industrial Revolution 4.0 characterised by cyber-physical systems, humanity has been ushered into the age of interactive, interconnected digital devices and the Internet of Things (IoT), which has shaped private life to a large extent. With the greater use of such devices and systems, these have been absorbed in the day-to-day human interactions. Naturally, they have also become a subject of evidence, playing an important role in digital forensics. However, their involvement in administrative and judicial processes poses wide legal, personal and ethical questions, given the high risks of them being misused to invade privacy. The balance of administering justice and protecting privacy lies on a thin line which the court needs to decide and lay guidelines on.
