E-waste is one of the fastest-growing solid waste streams. The improper handling of e-waste, like inappropriate disposal, poor dismantling practices, etc., endangers the environment and human health. It also hampers the achievability of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). An even greater threat of wrongful e-waste management is to the privacy of the data stored on discarded electronic gadgets such as pen drives, hard disks, SD cards, etc. This aspect often remains unattended by people. This chapter provides an overview of e-waste, how it is disposed of, the hazards it causes, the global and Indian scenario of e-waste generation, the pre-existing e-waste legislations, and some preventive measures for proper e-waste management from a forensic viewpoint.
