Prolonged Transitions into Adulthood in Germany
摘要
The chapter outlines the specific contexts of youth transitions in Germany as part of the comparative analysis of this book, focussing on young people’s transitions from school to work as well as their housing and domestic transitions (leaving home, marriage/cohabitation and parenthood). The first part provides an insight into the historical background of young people’s transitions. Emphasis is placed on the special developments since the 1980s, together with reflections from transition research. In addition, the contexts in which young people’s transitions take place, such as the education system, the welfare system, the labour market or social norms, are presented for Germany. The second part uses data from the survey ‘Growing up in Germany’ (AID:A) to present findings on school-to-work, housing and domestic transitions. The analysis is focused on young women and men in their early 20s and late 20s/early 30s. The findings show prolonged transition processes into adulthood that extend well into the third decade of life. The results also highlight the importance of successful placement in the labour market for both young women and men. However, young men are much more likely to be in secure standardised work than young women. In terms of life satisfaction, it is clear that women outside the labour market are less satisfied than those in employment.
