This chapter outlines the specific contexts of youth transitions in Japan within the comparative analysis of this book, shedding light on young people’s transitions from school to work and their housing and domestic transitions (leaving home, marriage or cohabitation, and parenthood). The initial discussion focuses on the general historical background and trends of youth transitions in Japan over the past decades, based on evidence from existing literature and data. Using a representative Japanese youth survey (the Japanese Life Course Panel Survey of Youth), we then examine the transitions of Japanese youth from school to work and their housing and domestic transitions around 2010. The results show that education, employment status and gender are substantially related to the transitions of young people in Japan. They also show that employment status and gender affect their perceptions of risk as well as housing and domestic transitions. In particular, out-of-work men and those in non-standard employment were less likely to make housing and domestic transitions and were the least satisfied with their lives compared with men who were in standard employment.
