Land degradation is a compelling issue driven by human activity and climate change; however, growing recognition and initiatives aim to address and restore degraded lands globally and nationally. Agricultural land is vital for food production but is at risk of degradation from unsustainable farming practices, overgrazing, and deforestation, leading to soil erosion and nutrient depletion. Forest lands are degraded through deforestation and illegal logging, resulting in a loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Urban and industrial areas often face degradation due to soil sealing from construction, which impacts water management and may lead to contamination from industrial waste. Wetlands are also threatened by drainage and pollution, losing their ecological functions. Rangelands, used for grazing, suffer from overgrazing and climate change effects. On a global scale, initiatives are being launched to restore degraded lands. This chapter provides an update on the various international initiatives and commitments.
