This study utilizes chatbot technology to assist students in accessing information anytime and anywhere in an information-related course at a public university in Japan. This chatbot, ClassMate, uses Dify as the main platform and is powered by OpenAI’s large language model (LLM). This chatbot is primarily trained on the course structure, materials, and general information concerning the course. However, students can also ask questions with regard to the topics presented in the course. Following 7 weeks of use of ClassMate, 31 students enrolled in the course complete an online survey to determine their covert perceptions of the usage of the technology. The findings indicate that ClassMate is a helpful tool that provides information without requiring the students to contact the lecturer directly. Its key benefits include not needing to download any application and offering access across different devices. Overall, students exhibited a positive outlook to use ClassMate for their courses.
