Agricultural Practices in Linseed Cultivation (National and International)

Linseed is an essential crop of great importance in the nutritional and industrial sector. It is an annual herbaceous winter crop, requiring cold and temperate conditions for optimal growth. The cultivation and yield of linseed are primarily dependent on selection of varieties, sowing period, environmental conditions, and management practices. A well-drained, fertile, medium to heavy soil, such as silty clay, clay loam, and silty loam soils are suitable along with a rain-fed area. The crop management practices vary with the selected linseed variety and geographical area. The genetic makeup of linseed has a significant effect on its degree of resistance to environmental stresses and nutritional profile, especially the omega-3 content, which is beneficial for human health. Low temperature during winters promotes the production of higher proportions of omega-3 fatty acids. Linseed cultivation also has positive effects on soil health. The residues fortify the soil with organic matter, thus, promoting the microbial activity and soil fertility. Additionally, it also aids in controlling soil erosion and restoring the soil nutrient balance. The harvesting practice for linseed largely depends on its sowing time and winter spread. Rising consumer demands can be addressed by application of diverse fertilizers and their combinations according to recommendations of soil health cards, adoption of organic and green manuring practices, incorporating leguminous crops in cropping systems and implementation of integrated nutrient management strategies. The chapter comprehensively focuses on the agricultural practices of linseed production at the global and national level (India).
