Artificial intelligence (AI) has become the key driver of innovations that can transform clinical practice and virology research. Although AI in virology can range from basic research to public health and medicine, human challenges and patient care put human needs and human values in the spotlight of any AI development. Herein, Human-Centric Artificial Intelligence (HCAI), or the approach of placing human values and human-centric considerations at the core and the beginning of AI and its development, is of particular relevance in clinical virology. Being guided by respectful and participative, patient-friendly AI, this kind of AI technology in virology can support the clinical virologist in pivotal decisions. To virtually cover this technology and the human-virology interface, this paper presents the backbone, the implications, and new challenges of clinical virology, including human genetics, virology, diagnosis, and treatment of viral diseases. The multidisciplinary CARER model, or comprehensive assessment and referral of environments and roles, addresses environmental and individual factors. The motivation for this chapter is driven by the ethical choices that are necessary for virology research when it comes to viral infections and opposing patient needs. Moreover, recent outbreaks of viral infections have supported the necessity for paradigm shifts and novel approaches. The Human-Centric AI for Virology and Precision Clinical Decision-Making Workshop was held to bring together AI, virology, informatics, and medicine specialists for optimal discussions of topics involving AI and clinical virology. The medical parts cover continuous problems around the importance of personalized medicine. In addition, precision and personalized medicine must consider human genetics and individual variabilities as well as viral mutations. Traditionally, these are addressed by various diagnostic methods on the molecular, cellular, and functional levels to provide a particular precedent in clinical decision-making. With patients, such steps are always technology-mediated, a kind of technological triangulation. Physicians focus on educating and informing each patient in the context of the available evidence-based information and sharing the decision-making process with them. More and more complex HCAI is proposed in the literature and proves to be not just technology-mediated. It encloses a judgment driven by human values and interests: strictly speaking, because HCAI uses inductive solid relationships, it needs an understanding of the backward-looking notion of causation.
