This chapter analyzes the impact blockchain technology has in the field of medical virology as far as safeguarding data, improving processes, and increasing efficiency are concerned. It demonstrates through multiple case studies how blockchain technology is being used across the world in public health, vaccine tracking, viral genomics, clinical trials, electronic health records (EHRs), pandemic monitoring, and supply chain management. The first case presented in this chapter is Singapore’s use of IBM blockchain for TraceTogether which greatly streamlined the contact tracing process for COVID-19. AlliGuard’s Counterfeit Protection System in Estonia established a blockchain vaccination authentication system to protect the supply chain from counterfeits which improved the integrity of the network. Through its system in the United States, HealthVerity managed to track COVID-19 viral genomic data, which enhanced our understanding of virus evolution and distribution. In addition, this chapter presents the case of MediBloc in South Korea. MediBloc’s blockchain solution enhanced clinical trial management by ensuring data security and better facilitating researchers’ collaboration. This chapter explains that blockchain technology implementation in medical virology creates safer information protection while improving system integration and patient data security and boosting productivity in clinical operations. The technology demonstrates its capability of improving patient outcomes together with better public health administration and comprehensive high-tech security for the healthcare system.

摘要
