This aim of this study was to identify and manage psychosocial stressors in the working conditions of the Gas Company of East Azerbaijan Province using a participatory ergonomics approach. The study used a mixed-methods research design, conducted in three phases, including identification of the psychosocial risk factors, the development of a comprehensive questionnaire, and the implementation of interventions using future workshops and feedback frames. In total 37 dimensions of psychosocial risk factors were identified and reclassified, with 12 dimensions recognized as important by the participants. These included skill utilization, confidence in peers, management support, work-life conflict, fairness, reward and pay, performance evaluation, welfare and financial facilities, job promotion, recognition, job security, and efficiency of tools and equipment. These were developed into a questionnaire of 12 scales and 45 items with good psychometric properties. Multivariable linear regression analysis revealed that performance evaluation, job security, management support, recognition, and skill utilization were the main challenges affecting psychological stress. Based on the participatory ergonomics workshop, 87 ideas were generated to address these stressors, and 14 action plans were formulated to implement solutions. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of a comprehensive qualitative-quantitative plan and the participatory ergonomics approach in identifying and managing psychosocial risk factors. The results suggest that this approach can be a suitable method for improving the safety and health of employees by developing evidence-based action plans to control or reduce these risk factors. The findings are relevant to other large organizations seeking to minimize poor performance and high turnover.
