Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses face high workloads due to the complexity and need for direct patient care. Several studies have been carried out to quantify the workload of ICU nurses, most of them from the patient’s perspective and needs, leaving out aspects related to the nursing staff, the characteristics of the work system, and the temporality of nursing activities. Therefore, it is necessary to focus systemically and innovatively on ICU nurse workload as a multidimensional concept and the factors contributing to its increase or reduction. This problem motivated this doctoral research, proposing a project to design a methodology for modeling the effects of ICU nurse workload determinants. The study intends to integrate Ergonomics/Human Factors (E/HF) with system dynamics modeling. This approach can provide dynamic simulations of system behavior over time and allow prospective evaluation and analysis of ergonomic interventions.
