Bed movers are motorized machines coupled to hospital beds to aid caregivers in moving them. Despite their potential benefits, bed movers are rarely used in hospitals. This study investigates whether poor usability contributes to their low adoption. Eleven caregivers tested five different bed movers in a hospital setting, performing three usage scenarios: connecting and disconnecting the bed mover to/from the bed and navigating a standardized course. The time required to complete these tasks was measured, and subjective physical strain was assessed using the Borg scale. Caregiver satisfaction with task execution was evaluated using the Single Ease Question (SEQ), and overall user acceptance was measured with a standardized questionnaire. Usability issues were identified by two supervisors using a three-point scale (good, medium, poor). Significant differences were found between the bed movers, particularly in turning in confined spaces and connecting to beds. Overall, user acceptance of bed movers was low. Currently, bed movers are only suitable for hospitals where long distances have to be covered.
