Given the risks women face and the financial contribution that women provide to families in Algerian Sahara Desert settlements, ergonomic workspace design should take into account female activities in architectural design. One of the main female activities in Algerian Sahara Desert villages and settlements is the traditional carpet weaving. Although, the weaving work provides good economic return, but on the other hand, it is very tedious, having adverse health effects. To name well-known occupational risks of carpet weaving industry, awkward postures, repetitive movements, contact stress, long working time and no rest pauses are the most visible factors in the development of WMSDs. On the other hand, carpet-weaving work is generally, carried out at home, in tiny spaces, lacking the required lighting, ventilation, and the appropriate physical work conditions, lack of spaces for movement and the necessary arrangement facilities. Such unsafe and unhealthy working conditions are a result of inappropriate workplace, which in the first instance, was not designed for carpet weaving activity. Starting from a participatory workspace design process, the present ergonomics intervention is seeking the design of a pilot workspace for carpet weaving domestic activity, that takes into account three view points, that of the users, the ergonomist, and the architect who implement the ergonomics principles into a built space environment.
