Mapping of Risk Factors for Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders in Construction Workers: A Meta-analysis Study

Construction workers, especially in developing nations such as Indonesia, have a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The purpose of this meta-analysis was to identify the key risk factors associated with MSDs among construction workers. Twelve papers published within the past 20 years were analyzed. Findings indicate that smoking (odds ratio [OR]: 2.88; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.35–3.53), uncomfortable posture (OR: 11.9; 95% CI: 6.32–22.64), and psychological demand (OR: 1.28; 95% CI: 1.09–1.49) play an integral part in contributing to Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs). This study revealed that manual material handling (MMH) and psychological demands had a considerable influence on upper limb complaints. The odds ratio for MMH was 1.58, with a 95% confidence interval of 1.39–1.79; psychological demand had an odds ratio of 1.29, with a 95% confidence interval of 1.12–1.49. To improve occupational health management strategies for management purposes, awkward posture correction and psychological demand management must be prioritized as primary interventions.
