Ergonomic Approach in Risks Analysis in Automotive Industry: From Failure Modes Analysis to Activity Analysis

This work is concerned with the intersection of two fields: ergonomics and risk management in the automotive industry, and proposes the articulation of activity and risks analysis. Methods: This was an Ergonomic intervention carried out in a company operating in the automotive field and located in Tunisia and included two stages: one exploratory stage to study what the self-analysis of the real work produces within the exchange groups, and how the analysis of effects and the search of solutions – principles mobilized in Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMEA) and one complementary stage of analysis of the real activity. Results: The FMEA analysis identified six productions steps and 29 risks, 31% of which were critical. A noise constraint was detected and an action plan was proposed. A subsequent evaluation of this action plan revealed the operators’ dissatisfaction. The observation of the work station revealed the emergence of thermic constraint and an exposure to aerosol emission. During direct interviews, the operators were invited to provide suggestions for improvements. The cabinet was equipped with a mechanical ventilation system that complied with the recommended number of air flow changes. An air conditioning system was installed to guarantee the thermic comfort. Conclusions: This study combined two classic ergonomics methodologies: an FMEA analysis, observations and interviews. This diagnosis assessed the participants’ ability to analyze the constraints and the risks incurred using the FMEA method. Ergonomics has been mobilized to assist the FMEA method and gradually develop an action plan involving the worker.
