Analysis of Factors Influencing Safety Riding Behavior in High School Students in City of Surabaya

Traffic accident become one problem in the city of Surabaya, Indonesia, where-by the end of 2022 there was a 26% increase in motorcycle accident cases involving high school students. One of the contributing factors is rider behavior. Safety riding behavior can avoid traffic accidents. This study aims to determine the factors that influence the safety riding behavior of high school students in the city of Surabaya using the partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) method. Respondents in this study were high school students in Surabaya with a total of 141 respondents obtained using a stratified sampling technique. The results showed that 91% of respondents had safety riding behavior and 9% had unsafety riding behavior. Based on the results of hypothesis testing, it was found that the factors influencing the safety riding behavior of high school students in Surabaya were the environment with relate to physical conditions around the rider (P-Value 0.018), the role of the community/neighbors where they lived (P-Value 0.022), the presence of the police and CCTV (P-Value 0.002), the role of peers like school friends and non- school friends in reminding students (P-Value 0.009), and the role of parents in monitoring their kids (P-Value 0.001). While the factors that do not affect are the workload (P-Value 0.703) and the behavior of other road users (P-Value 0.134). Recommendations are intended for high school students in Surabaya who do not behave safely in riding as well as the police, parents, peers, and the community/neighbors.
