This study explores the use of the backcasting method in design workshops to address urban mobility challenges. With rapid urbanization, issues such as congestion, pollution, and inadequate infrastructure significantly impact citizens’ quality of life, environmental sustainability, and economic development. By engaging citizens in defining public policies, products, and services for urban mobility, the study aimed to align solutions with the community’s needs and aspirations. Backcasting, a futures studies method, helps visualize desirable futures and identify necessary actions to achieve them. The study involved workshops sessions with citizens, focusing on three macro-scenarios: shared mobility, active mobility, and high-tech mobility. Utilizing the backcasting method in the design workshop sessions with the SQUID technique, participants identified concerns and generated 397 solutions categorized into public policies, products, services, and product-service systems. Key findings highlighted the importance of public policies and services in addressing urban mobility issues. Public policies emphasized government planning, investment, and regulation to ensure equitable access and efficient mobility. Services leveraged digital and intelligent technologies to streamline urban transit, reducing daily stress and promoting continuous, seamless mobility. The contributions of this study are threefold: it demonstrates the effectiveness of backcasting in engaging citizens, generates a comprehensive set of actionable solutions, and promotes a sense of ownership and commitment to achieving future visions.
