Using Sensing Technology to Improve Access from Campus to the Classroom for Wheelchair-Bound Students with Spinal Cord Injuries

As students with physical disabilities pursue higher education, campus accessibility becomes paramount. For wheelchair users, seamless navigation is essential. Beyond legal requirements like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), universities strive to foster a culture of inclusion. In a groundbreaking project, a custom-designed video-on-the-move recording system was attached to an electric-powered wheelchair’s handlebars. Activated by a rare-earth magnet, the camera captured the student’s journey—from dormitories to classrooms, libraries, and beyond. The system automatically turned off when the wheelchair was stationary for 3 min. Results revealed significant challenges: Entrance Failures: Batteries powering outside door mechanisms often failed; Door Design: Old-style knobs hindered accessibility; Pedestrian Hazards: Near collisions with cars at crosswalks. Weather Woes: Falls on icy, snow-covered pathways. Purdue’s Disability Resource Center (DRC) swiftly addressed these issues, promoting safety and inclusion. While an online form facilitates student accessibility reports, the video recorder system remains effective— affordable, reliable, and visually compelling. “Seeing is believing,” and this innovative approach ensures a more accessible campus for all.
