Proposal for the Assessment of Technically Measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior at the Workplace

To counteract health hazards arising from insufficient physical activity at sedentary workplaces, risk assessments and guidelines based on dose-response relationships are needed. Advances in measurement techniques together with standardized exposure quantification and assessments methods over different studies offer high potential to create a consistent evidence base. This paper proposes standardized basic exposure indicators for sensor-based activity measurements. Based on literature relevant metrics and assessments were compiled ranging from time portions of body positions and activities, changes between behaviors and bout length distributions to indicators of energy expenditure. The indicators were tested on 21 work shifts with exposure measured by a thigh-worn sensor. They were found to be plausible and discriminative. The suggested approach requires further application, development and testing as well as extension to more precise analyses with multi-sensor systems.
