Sensors and Sensor Fusion in Mobile Robots: Emerging Technologies and Approaches

Autonomous mobile robots represent a rapidly advancing field of research in which sensors are fundamental for performing various tasks. However, sensors employed for navigation are often affected by errors and uncertainties, making reliable operation challenging. To overcome these limitations, sensor fusion has emerged as an effective approach for enhancing navigation performance. This paper presents a comprehensive review of different types of sensors used in mobile robots along with the technologies applied for multi-sensor data fusion. It emphasizes the significant impact of integrating sensor data in improving perception, navigation accuracy, and decision-making capabilities. By mitigating individual sensor shortcomings through fusion techniques, higher levels of precision and dependability can be achieved. These developments are expected to contribute substantially to future advancements in automation, healthcare systems, and autonomous transportation.
