Implications of Bridge Design Provisions for Infrastructure Development: A Comparative Review for Codal Provisions in India, USA, and France

Concrete road bridges are essential for connecting people and supporting economic growth. These strong structures are carefully built following specific codes to ensure they are safe and long-lasting. However, the design standards for bridges differ around the world, with each country having its own set of guidelines. With an emphasis on Eurocode (EN) Standards, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Provisions, and Indian Road Congress (IRC) Provisions, this study offers a concise overview of bridge design regulations in France, the USA, and India. The analysis delves into design principles, live load considerations, and impact factors. Additionally, the paper clarifies several design techniques, including limit state design (LSD), working stress design (WSD), partial factor design (PFD), and load and resistance factor design (LRFD), emphasizing how they are used in the chosen clauses. Lane-wise live load distribution and impact factor provisions across the three standards are thoroughly examined, revealing disparities and their implications. Researchers, designers, and policymakers can benefit greatly from this comparison study as it helps identify project-specific requirements and adopt customized bridge design solutions. As nations strive for development, understanding and adapting to diverse bridge design provisions become paramount. The insights gathered from this study contribute to informed decision-making in infrastructure development projects, particularly in cross-border bridge constructions.
