This book examined three decades of Mozambique’s pursuit of peace, particularly emphasising the renewed violence and negotiation between 2012 and 2019, as well as the emerging forms of violent contestation, such as violent extremism and post-electoral violence. It has interrogated how the interaction between globalised liberal norms, authoritarian practices, and conflict dynamics has fundamentally shaped the country’s peacebuilding trajectory. By closely analysing this interplay, it has been argued that prevailing models of post-conflict recovery should be reconsidered. Mozambique challenges the enduring liberal-illiberal dichotomy in peacebuilding scholarship and foregrounds the centrality of internal political legitimacy in sustaining durable peace.
