The cyberthreat landscape becomes more serious every day. To counter this threat, a specialized area called digital forensics has been established to identify, gather, analyze, and report on crime scenes investigation data. The recent advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning have also contributed to the development of this field. In this article, the authors take a deep look at the role of artificial intelligence and machine learning on digital forensics and present as a comprehensive survey. This article also presents the limitations affecting the acceptability of the results as well as the future directions that this field may lead in.
