An Urban Design Approach Based on Digitalizing and Gamifying Urban Space
摘要
This paper investigates the innovative use of digitalization and gamification in urban design to address social sustainability challenges in rapidly evolving cities. Using Gensen, a metaverse platform launched in 2024, as a case study, the research explores how the integration of virtual environments with real urban spaces can foster new forms of social interaction and spatial usage. The pilot project conducted at SOLANA, Beijing, reveals how gamified urban experiences can transform public spaces by creating dynamic and inclusive social environments that encourage diverse user engagement. The findings highlight the potential of a game-aided design approach to redefine traditional urban typologies, promote social mixing, and support adaptive community-building in digitalized cities. The study also identifies emerging risks related to spatial inequality due to varying levels of access to digital tools and digital literacy. It proposes gamification as a mechanism to bridge these gaps by making urban environments more accessible and engaging.
