Exploring Mixed Reality for Vocational Training: A Comparative Study in Australian AEC Education

This study evaluates the effectiveness of Mixed Reality (MR) technology in enhancing learning experiences, to propose curricula recommendations in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) education sector. The methodology involved a user study conducted with carpentry students belonging to the Australian Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector, using MR tools. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and task performance assessments. Next, an educators’ panel session was conducted where academic participants reviewed the user study through pictures and videos, providing their feedback on MR applications in higher education. The findings from these sessions were analyzed and compared with each other. The primary results from qualitative data analysis highlighted the potential benefits and challenges of MR technology, such as usability issues and the need for improved graphic interfaces. Educators’ insights emphasized the importance of integrating MR in a way that complements traditional teaching methods. The findings suggest that successful integration of MR technologies requires addressing usability challenges, managing costs, and adopting an incremental implementation strategy, starting with elective courses and specializations to gradually introduce MR into curricula. This study contributes to the field by focusing on the practical application of MR in the VET sector and incorporating direct feedback from both students and educators.
