Effects of Plyometric Training on the Movement Speed Among Youth Male Basketball Players

Background. Movement speed is crucial for successful basketball performance, particularly for young athletes developing their physical and technical skills. Plyometric (PT) and resistance training (RT) are established methods for enhancing athletic performance. While PT emphasizes explosive power, RT focuses on increasing muscular strength and endurance. However, the comparative effects of these training methods on movement speed in young male basketball players remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate these effects to optimize training programs for this population. Objectives. This study aimed to compare the impact of a 12-week PT program versus a 12-week RT program on various speed-related performance metrics in 13–15-year-old male basketball players. Methods. Thirty-six male basketball players with at least two years of experience in National Youth Club training were randomly assigned to either the PT group or the RT group. A 12-week training program was implemented for each group. Performance was assessed before and after the intervention using the following tests: 10 m sprint, 20 m sprint, 4 × 6 m shuttle run, four-line shuttle run, triangular sliding step, full-court dribble layup, and full-court integrated dribble. Data were analyzed to determine significant performance improvements within and between groups. Results. The PT group demonstrated significant improvements in the 20 m sprint (p = 0.001), 4 × 6 m shuttle run (p = 0.001), four-line shuttle run (p = 0.003), triangular sliding step (p = 0.001), full-court dribble layup (p = 0.003), and full-court integrated dribble (p = 0.001). No significant changes were observed in the 10 m sprint for either group. When comparing between groups, no significant differences were found in the full-court integrated dribble (p = 0.505). However, the PT group exhibited significantly better performance in the 4 × 6 m shuttle run (p = 0.042), triangular sliding step (p = 0.044), and four-line shuttle run (p = 0.033). Conclusion. Both plyometric and resistance training effectively enhance movement speed in young male basketball players. However, plyometric training demonstrated greater efficacy in improving agility and movement speed, as evidenced by superior performance in the 4 × 6 m shuttle run, triangular sliding step, and four-line shuttle run. These findings suggest that incorporating plyometric exercises into training regimens can significantly improve speed-related attributes crucial for basketball performance in this age group.
