Evaluating the Technical Performance of a National U17 Soccer Team in Matches Against State-Level Opponents
摘要
This study examines the technical and tactical performance metrics of a national youth soccer team competing in an Under-17 League organized by the Ministry of Education Malaysia. The performance of the team was compared against three state-level opponents (aged 15.5 ± 0.75 years). Video analysis of three competitive matches was conducted using LongoMatch software to assess key performance indicators (KPIs) such as passing accuracy, possession control, dribbling success, defensive actions, and goal-scoring opportunities. The analysis revealed that the national elite youth team consistently implemented possession-based offensive tactics, prioritizing short, accurate passes to control the tempo of the game. However, no significant differences in offensive metrics, such as passing accuracy or possession, were observed between the national elite youth team and the state teams, suggesting consistent offensive tactics across all opponents. A key finding of this study was the significant variation in the national elite youth team’s defensive performance. The team applied higher levels of defensive pressure, executing more successful interceptions and tackles against stronger opponents. These findings suggest that the national elite youth team adjusted its defensive tactics based on the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition. Their proactive approach, characterized by high-pressure defensive actions and effective ball recoveries, was particularly evident against teams with more potent attacks. Statistical analysis, including ANOVA tests, confirmed significant differences in defensive metrics, such as interceptions, tackles, and clearances, when playing against different opponents. The results emphasize the importance of tactical flexibility in defense, demonstrating that national elite youth teams must adapt their match tactics based on the specific challenges posed by varying levels of competition. This study provides valuable insights for coaches and sports scientists, underscoring the need for tailored defensive training programs and match tactical preparation to enhance player development.
