This study examines the workload management strategies and Bronco test performance of the Malaysian Rugby team as they prepared for the 2024 Asia Rugby Championship. The investigation was structured around four comprehensive training camps, with the training regimen segmented into two distinct phases: a one-week preparation phase designed to cultivate foundational fitness and a subsequent three-week competition phase focused on refining performance for peak readiness. The Bronco test, a pivotal assessment of aerobic capacity and endurance, was administered at the beginning and end of each training phase. This facilitated a detailed evaluation of the players’ fitness levels and their physiological adaptation to varying training loads. Data collection encompassed not only Bronco test results but also daily training loads and recovery metrics, providing a holistic view of the team’s physical preparedness. Results demonstrate marked improvements in Bronco test performance throughout the preparation phase, indicative of enhanced aerobic capacity attributable to the elevated training volume. Transitioning into the competition phase, the emphasis shifted toward maintaining these performance gains through a strategic reduction in training volume while simultaneously increasing training intensity. Notably, Bronco test scores remained stable or exhibited slight improvements during this phase, underscoring the efficacy of the implemented workload management strategies. Statistical analysis revealed no significant difference between the average Bronco test times in the preparation phase (6.15 min) and the competition phase (6.52 min), with a p-value of 0.737. This suggests that the shift in training focus was successful in preserving the athletes’ aerobic capacity, despite the reduction in training volume. In conclusion, this study asserts that the structured training approach adopted by the Malaysian Rugby team was instrumental in adequately preparing the squad for the championship. The strategic management of training loads emerged as a critical factor in sustaining fitness levels and mitigating the onset of fatigue. The findings of this research provide significant insights for optimizing future training regimens, highlighting the importance of achieving a delicate balance between training intensity and recovery.
