Natural Sealants for Siddha Medicine System: Earthworm Burrow Clay Characterization

This research project investigates earthworm burrow clay as a potential sealing material for Siddha medicine vessels, focusing on comprehensive characterization. Siddha medicine, a traditional system in India, uses earthen vessels for medicine preparation and storage. Traditionally, medicines are sealed in earthen vessels using seelaimann, a termite cavern soil that adheres well due to its fine particles and good bonding characteristics. Earthworm burrow clay appears to be similar to termite cavern soil. However, there is a notable lack of scientific studies on this type of clay. Hence, this study aims to bridge this gap by comprehensively characterizing earthworm burrow clay through advanced analytical techniques. Understanding its physical, chemical, morphological, and mechanical properties will enhance its application in traditional practices. This research will integrate traditional knowledge with modern science, improving traditional medicine preparation methods and developing more effective sealing materials for Siddha medicine vessels.
