Urban Energy and Waste Management for BGI, Food Security and Climate Disaster Resilience

Food insecurity has become a burning issue in many regions of the world and climate change is aggravating it severity. Urban areas can lessen the effects of climate change by implementing Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI), which is made up of natural and semi-natural systems. The integration of urban energy systems and waste management plays a pivotal role in enhancing blue-green infrastructure (BGI), ensuring food security, and building climate disaster resilience. The synergies between urban energy and waste management practices are imperative to support sustainable urban environments in the face of climate change and increasing urbanization. By examining innovative approaches to energy generation, waste-to-energy conversion, and circular resource management, the chapter highlights strategies that reduce environmental footprints while enhancing urban resilience. BGI, integrated with sustainable waste and energy systems, can mitigate climate impacts by improving stormwater management, reducing urban heat, and providing green spaces. Moreover, efficient waste management systems, such as organic waste composting and bioenergy production, contribute to soil fertility and local food production, enhancing food security. This chapter will focus on how urban energy and waste management contribute to BGI, food security and disaster resilience in growing cities.
