Skirt improves the lateral load as well as vertical load-carrying capacity of the foundation. This paper presents a number of model tests to determine the bearing capacity of skirted ring footing subjected to vertical downward load and lateral load in the cohesionless soil with varied densities, i.e. loose, medium and dense soil, whose relative densities are 25%, 50% and 75% respectively. The outer diameter \((D)\) of model ring footing is 200 mm and inner diameter \((d)\) is 50 mm for ratio \(d/D\) 0.25. Double skirts have been used one at the outer circumference and the other at inner circumference. To know the effect of a skirt, skirt length is changed from \(0.5, 1\) and \(1.5D\) in each density of sand and tested under vertical downward load and lateral load. The results show that vertical load-carrying capacity is improved and settlement is reduced. Lateral load-carrying capacity is increased significantly under lateral load.

摘要

Foundation is the substructure which transmits the load of superstructure to the ground. In case of high lateral load, annular raft or ring foundation is stated to be more economical. Ring foundation is the best option in case of axi-symmetric structures such as chimney, overhead water tank and TV tower in which lateral load is very significant along with vertical load. There are various solutions that exist for the improvement of the bearing capacity among which skirt is one of them. Skirt is a driven sheet pile connected to the footing.
