Performance of an Inclined Trapezoidal Shape Spin Fin Pile Under Various Loading

The spin fin pile is a new pile-modification strategy that has four plates welded to the top or to the bottom of a conventional circular pile. The fin’s design is such that the top of one fin meets the bottom of the adjacent fin when seen from head to tip, providing 360° coverage. This paper presents comparative results of experimental investigations of model conventional circular piles and inclined trapezoidal shape spin fin piles embedded in the sand bed. The position of the fin is at the top for lateral loading and at the bottom for uplift and vertical loading. The performance of conventional circular pile and inclined trapezoidal shape spin fin pile for relative density 55% (medium-dense sand) with the same diameter and length has been studied. The results show that the ultimate load-bearing capacity of an inclined trapezoidal shape spin fin pile is more than that of a circular one, and it was found that as the number of piles increases bearing capacity increases. Further, the study can also be done for combined loading by considering various parameters.
