Geotechnical Aspects for Foundations of Tall Buildings

Nowadays cities are growing horizontally due to ‘Urbanisation’ and ‘Population Gain’, which are the biggest reason for the expansion of the land from the accommodation and utilisation point of view. But since the growth is very high, it has mandated to grow the city vertically as well. Building tall towers has now been a trend among the growing cities, and the cities are making the buildings taller and taller. The current tallest building in the world ‘Burj Khalifa’ is 848 m tall. Loads coming from these massive structures will ultimately be transferring to the ground only. Therefore, a Geotechnical Engineer plays a very crucial role in the design of the structure. Foundation structures of these skyscrapers have to be capable enough to withstand the dead and live load on the building. The wind load at such a great height is very high plus the vulnerability of the tower becomes more as far as seismicity is concerned. Before building such immensely high towers, a thorough process has to be followed for the analysis and design of the sub-structure of the skyscraper. The current paper discusses the various factors which affect the sustainability of the foundation for tall structures such as site geology, site history, loading conditions, ground movements, extent of ground exploration, quantity of samples, performing field and laboratory tests, static and dynamic tests, durability, soil–foundation structure interaction and study of numerical simulation of the site and foundation structure which should be thoroughly examined for the design of the foundation system.
