Auditory brainstem implant surgery has gained worldwide popularity because it offers a chance for hearing to many patients who might otherwise remain deaf. For over two decades, ABIs have been used primarily in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) who have bilateral vestibular schwannomas. The main goal in these cases is to provide hearing sensation after reducing or removing the tumours. Recent evidence also shows that ABIs are highly effective for non-tumour patients, especially pre-lingually deaf children with severe cochlear abnormalities that make them unsuitable for cochlear implantation.
