Cochlear Implants: History and Basic Concepts

About 1.5 billion people worldwide are affected by various degrees of hearing loss, out of which 430 million have moderate or higher degree of hearing loss as per the World hearing report of the World Health Organisation. The above data highlights the need for meaningful rehabilitation for huge chunk of the world’s population. Cochlear implant innovation has been playing a pivotal role for such people, who would be otherwise lost in the world of deafness. The present chapter highlights the innovation of the cochlear implant, initial experiments that led to this present day marvel, and its basic functioning.
