On September 30, 1999, a radioactive leak occurred at the Tokaimura uranium processing plant in Japan. The accident was caused when the private company JCO (Japan Nuclear Fuel Conversion Co.) injected more uranium than allowed into a precipitation tank used to dissolve uranium impurities with nitric acid, triggering a chain nuclear fission. Japan’s nuclear power tragedies did not end there. On March 11, 2011, at 2:46 p.m., the most powerful earthquake in Japanese history, measuring magnitude 9.0, struck northeastern Japan. About 50 min after the earthquake, a 15-m-high tsunami struck the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
