Niagara Falls, located on the border between the United States and Canada, is renowned for its grandeur as one of the largest waterfalls in the world. In 1892, an ambitious entrepreneur named William T. Love planned to construct a 10-kilometer-long canal in the area to facilitate ship navigation and build a hydroelectric power plant. However, construction was halted when the canal reached approximately 1.6 kilometers in length. From 1942 to 1950, 22,000 tons of toxic industrial waste were dumped into the abandoned canal, and this waste led to the area being declared an environmental disaster site requiring emergency evacuation in 1978—the first such declaration in U.S. history.
