It is very important to remove sulfur from coal before combustion in order to prevent the release of sulfur oxides (SOx). The inorganic sulfur component of coal has been removed using both chemical and physical techniques. This element is typically connected to pyrites (FeS2). However, no commercially viable techniques for the removal of the organic sulfur component have been identified. This article offers microbiological techniques for releasing sulfur bound to organic matter from coal. This study’s specific objectives were to determine whether a strong biologically active population, such as activated sludge biomass, can remove organic sulfur from coal and to develop sulfur analytical techniques that are less time-consuming than the established norms for screening research results.
