Lu XunLu Xun (1881–1936) lived in a period not much later than that of Lin ShuLin Shu and Wang GuoweiWang Guowei. When he made his debut in the literary world, Chinese society was engulfed in more conflict than in the age of Lin and Wang and a variety of Western ideas had made deeper inroads into China, exerting powerful, far-reaching, and unprecedented influence on modern Chinese society. In the new social and intellectual climate (and with his personal temperament,) it is understandable that Lu XunLu Xun did not choose to follow in Wang Guowei’sWang Guowei footsteps, i.e., to shut himself up in an ivory tower and be content with doing purely intellectual exploration and literary enquires irrelevant to China’s reality.
