The multidimensional problem of car emissions in California has both environmental and economic ramifications, particularly considering the state’s significant dependence on gasoline-powered automobiles which account to 89% of the existing light-duty fleet. The present study undertakes an analysis of the emissions lifecycle assessment pertaining to the current vehicle fleet in California, with specific emphasis on gasoline, gasoline-hybrid, and diesel cars. By employing data-driven approaches, this study demonstrates that gasoline cars are the predominant mode of transportation on California’s highways, resulting in a significant annual emission rate of 415 MMT of CO2. When considering emissions on a per-vehicle basis, hybrid-electric cars demonstrate a noteworthy decrease in pollutants, including a substantial reduction in tailpipe CO2 emissions, emitting about 28% less per mile than gasoline and diesel. The competitive pricing of HEVs is further emphasized by economic assessments, particularly when considering both state and federal subsidies. The results indicate that gasoline vehicles now have a significant environmental impact, but the use of hybrid technology presents a hopeful transitional solution for achieving a more sustainable transportation system. This research underscores the significance of legislative decisions, industry practices, and consumer choices in relation to the possibility of hybrid automobiles as a crucial milestone in California’s pursuit of a more environmentally aware trajectory.
