Conversion of Poultry Waste to Biofuels and Chemicals

Poultry waste is a substantial and mainly unexplored resource for the production of valuable products. This chapter investigates the viability of using several thermochemical and biochemical processes to transform poultry waste—which is mostly made up of feathers, manure, and other organic residues—into biofuels, biodiesel, biogas, and bio-oil. Poultry waste is a major source of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, that have the potential to be converted into biofuels like bio-oil, biogas (methane), bioethanol, biochar, and other chemicals like struvite and heme iron. This chapter highlights the potential of poultry waste as a cost-effective and sustainable source for biofuel production. The efficiency and scalability of producing biofuel from poultry waste can be improved by further development of processing technologies and integration into existing waste management systems, which would contribute to a more sustainable future.
