Energy requirements and solid waste poses major challenge to sustainable development. However, valorisation of solid waste to fuels and chemicals holds the key to cleaner environment. Although, valorisation studies at laboratory level seems to be promising but its actual evaluation in terms of environment benefit can only be evaluated by LCA as it involves multiple inputs. As far as fuels are concerned, we can conclude that biogas generation from waste is most efficient on LCA, while biohydrogen is in terms of calorific value, but very few LCA studies have been conducted on it. As far as bioethanol and biodiesel are concerned, it can be made both using feed stocks and waste. Bioethanol has been proven efficient on LCA from feed but its production on waste has been proven only at pilot scale level while biodiesel seems to be nearing being successful biofuel based on LCA data. On the basis of our survey, we recommend solid waste valorisation to biogas as the best waste-to-energy proposition.
