A Review on Antimicrobial Compounds from Selected African Medicinal Plants

Medicinal plants have been used in the treatment of several diseases, and many plant-derived therapeutic agents are being used to combat microbial infection. However, antimicrobial resistance is still a threat to treatment of microbial diseases. The discovery and development of novel antimicrobial drugs is extremely challenging in Africa. Nevertheless, the role of natural products from plants with diverse and complex structures cannot be underestimated, and as such, continuous efforts towards searching for antimicrobial agents from plants to combat antimicrobial resistance are crucial. Due to Africa’s rich biodiversity and historical use of medicinal plants in traditional medicine, Africa could be a potential source of effective antimicrobial agents to overcome multidrug resistance. In this review, we discuss the natural sources of antimicrobial compounds and summarize the isolated compounds from African medicinal plants as potential novel candidates in the development of alternative therapeutic antimicrobial drugs. The study included 290 articles identified by searching articles published using ScienceDirect, PubMed and Web of Science databases. Novel drug discovery proves challenging due to the frequent re-discovery of known antimicrobial agents, and the yield of unknown antimicrobial agents is low for further research to be conducted; thus, there is a need to synthesize analogues of the isolated compounds which have exhibited significant antimicrobial activity so as to optimize the activity and ascertain structure-activity relationships.
