Syphilis is a rising global health concern affecting approximately 5.6 million people annually. Primary syphilis lesions, which are typically painless, cannot be easily recognized, particularly in less visible areas such as the cervix or rectum. In addition to syphilis, gonorrhea presents a significant global health issue, with the WHO estimating about 87 million new cases each year, making it one of the most common STIs worldwide. The global prevalence of gonorrhea is 0.9% with more men affected than women. In many rural African regions, medicinal plants are widely used to manage and treat syphilis and gonorrhea. However, in African traditional settings, treatment is challenging because it is based on the appearance of symptoms to identify the cause of the illness. Further, diagnosis of some symptoms takes a long time to manifest, often when the disease has progressed. Thus, the plants used to manage the two diseases are often the same or confused. The book chapter explores current traditional methods for diagnosing syphilis and gonorrhea and identifies about 159 plants from 127 genera and 53 families used in Africa for their treatment.
