The water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is a versatile livestock species contributing significantly to milk, meat, leather, manure and draught power, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Despite its superior feed conversion efficiency and potential for high-quality meat production, buffaloes are underutilized in commercial meat production compared to beef cattle. This chapter discusses management and breeding practices aimed at enhancing the production of quality buffalo meat. It emphasizes the importance of scientific rearing, selective breeding and optimized feeding practices for young male buffalo calves to produce tender, lean and palatable meat comparable to beef. Furthermore, the development of specialized meat breeds and commercial feedlot systems is explored as a pathway to address existing challenges and maximize buffalo meat production efficiency.
