Shrinkage cavity is a common internal defect in continuous casting billets (Cáceres et al. in Scr Mater 40:631–637, 1999), which can significantly reduce the mechanical properties and service life of metallic materials. As is known, defects such as shrinkage cavities are the sources of crack initiation (Murakami in Eng Fract Mech 22:101–114, 1985). The implementation of unreasonable reduction in the bending and straightening section of the continuous caster is extremely likely to cause crack propagation at the shrinkage cavity.
