This chapter’s overview of European history from 476 until 1350 is intended as backdrop to the story that follows in the succeeding pages. Until 476, most of what we call ‘Europe’ was under the rule of the Roman Empire. This was a time when Persia was a dominant power to its east, and Islam was yet to rise as a political force. In the year 476 the German chieftain Odoacer ousted the last Roman emperor of the West, Romulus Augustulus. The Eastern Roman Empire, wealthier and stronger, continued as the Byzantine Empire through the European Middle Ages into 1453, when it was defeated by the Ottoman Turks.
